Excited about Dell’s upcoming Windows 8 tablet? No, me neither. But you might be when you see what the company is planning. According to this leaked slide, one of its first tablets will be a 10.1-inch device named the Latitude 10, which looks to be a much-improved version of the Latitude ST.
In addition to its 10.1-inch HD (1366 x 768) display, the Latitude 10 will boast a dual-core Intel Atom processor, 2GB of RAM, a 128GB solid-state drive, an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera, and a 2-megapixel front-facing camera. Some of its more interesting features include a fingerprint scanner, and a removable battery. According to Neowin, who obtained the slide you see above, the Latitude 10′s standard battery will give you between six and eight hours of use. But you can add a larger one that will give you between ten and twelve hours. They also say the slate will be available in the “late Fall/November time-frame.” The slide is missing one key feature, and that is the tablet’s price tag. Unlike its notebooks and desktops, Dell’s tablets have traditionally featured very large price tags. The Latitude ST, for example, costs several hundred dollars more than the entry-level iPad. This is a major problem when attempting to compete with devices like the iPad, which offer high-end specifications at reasonable prices. For the Latitude 10 to be a success, Dell will need to be able to deliver it at a competitive price. No matter how much consumers want to play James Bond with a fingerprint scanner, they’re not going to pay huge premiums for a Dell tablet.
